Carlota Guerrero

Carlota Guerrero is a modern artist, who was born in Spain, Barcelona in 1989. Self-taught, Carlota first started taking photographs as a young teenager. She exploded onto the world scene with her iconic portrait of Solange Knowles for the artist’s music album “A Seat at the Table” in 2016. Since then her unique style has hugely influenced the lens we see women through today. Her work reflects a modern, progressive and body confident vision in photography similar to #MeToo phenomenon in feminism.

«I take pictures because when I see something that harbors beauty I tend to get very nervous, and I need to do something with that energy, which usually translates into taking a picture…What I try to evoke isn’t more than what I have felt at that moment in time, so I guess I’m putting together an inventory of everything that moves me or affects me».

In an industry dominated by men shooting women’s bodies, Carlota vision is refreshing. The femininity that she captures is honest and empowering. She has collaborated with global brands such as Helmut Lang, Mugler, Givenchy or Dior and with artists such as Rosalia, Solange, Rupi Kaur or Arca.

Whether shooting intimate portraits, wild landscapes or the simple objects of everyday life, Guerrero’s photographs can be described by their focus on balance, moody light, femininity and what she terms “the animals inside us”.
Images shot predominantly on medium format film, the celestial body of work combines photography and filmmaking with Guererro’s own unique art direction, with movement and choreography heavily influencing each considered frame. Groups of subjects are often posed in a dancer-like fashion, interconnected through limbs, objects, or braided hair.

At other times, her models are featured alone and nude, exuding divine feminine power and sexual confidence; they are inspiring shots for many women looking to celebrate their own power.

«My body is the body of a woman, and, in the bodies of other women, I find a union».

With muted color palettes and an ethereal visual quality, what lies at the heart of Carlota Guererro’s rich portfolio is the ability to subvert the male gaze, and transform the female nude into what she refers to as a “spiritual force”.

For Guerrero, challenging the patriarchal vision upon womens’ bodies relates just as much to the woman being photographed as to the person creating the image.

Guerrero explains: “The important thing is that the woman herself decides. It’s not about what the image is like, but who takes the decision to represent the woman in this way.”
The personality of her models, their inner nature are shown in the works of Guerrero in a manner that goes beyond simple aesthetics. Carlota Guerrero artistic approach is influenced by her interest in the mysticism of ancient goddess religions. For Carlota, these photo sessions are spaces of healing, in which her female subjects can be vulnerable, loved and respected.
