ARSENIC
Cristina Scalabrini, a Finalist of the FotoSlovo Award 2024, is an artist exploring the boundary between reality and the surreal, crafting projects that invite viewers to question and reflect.

Her creative expressions span both analog and digital photography, as well as collage in its many forms. Nature's elements, dreamlike motifs, and literary associations are recurring themes in her work, infused with a surreal perspective that shapes her artistic choices in both content and style. Through her imagery, Cristina seeks to captivate and amaze, often imbuing her pieces with a subtle sense of unease.

She challenges the notion of reality as purely positive, embracing its complexity. Yet, at the heart of her visions lies a tender sense of kindness and gentleness. Cristina's art is not confined to aesthetic exploration but aspires to inspire questions, encouraging viewers to look beyond the surface.
ARSENIC

In the hidden rooms of the Kosmos Natural Sciences Museum in Pavia, Italy, the line between the natural and unnatural blurs. Here lie the unexhibited relics of a bygone era—animals transformed into simulacra of their past lives, evoking both wonder and sorrow in an age where Nature is increasingly besieged and wounded by human hands.

These creatures, once sacrificed in the name of science, now exist as silent yet tangible presences. Their skins, stretched over wooden forms, transcend their static state, reclaiming a sense of reality through the boundless potential of dreams.
"Beneath the dust and shrouds, something endures: an unnatural nature, a gaze from sightless eyes, a stillness that vibrates, a silence that listens."

Through meticulous care and preservation, humans have carried these specimens into the future. Far from obsolete, they hold immense scientific value. Treated with arsenic, they harbor DNA and genetic information vital to modern research.

Paradoxically, arsenic—a harbinger of death—also serves as a guardian of life by preserving these traces of the past.
Beneath the dust and shrouds, something endures: an unnatural nature, a gaze from sightless eyes, a stillness that vibrates, a silence that listens. Yet within this stillness lies a longing for renewal, a delicate yet resolute plea for nature's recovery.

It is both a gentle whisper and a powerful cry—a call for redemption, resilience, and hope.
